THE HUNT

At Sandveld Safaris we specialise in hunting the Kalahari plains game and you will be surprised how much life is sustained by this semi-arid haven.  From the mighty Eland, the world’s largest antelope, to the Wildebeest, Gemsbuck, the famous Kudu, Zebra, Impala, Giraffe, Hyena, Duiker, Jackal, Warthog, just to name a few.

There are many water holes on Sandveld, and without any other surface water during the winter dry season, these are an oasis for all the wildlife and vital for their survival. The water holes are also the best and our first place to look for game animals.

 SAVANNAH

The hunting starts early and lasts through to mid-morning, then again from late afternoon until dark. Through the heat of the day there is little to no animal movement while they shelter in the shade, waiting for the cooler temperatures before moving and starting to feed. Like the animals, we take shelter back at the lodge through the heat of the day, for lunch, and enjoy the surroundings, taking the time to rest and prepare for the evening hunt. Regulations in Namibia allow hunting to take place from half an hour before sunrise, through to half an hour after the sun has set in the evening.

SAN BUSHMAN

The savanna of Sandveld is part of the vast ancestral homeland of the San Bushman.

With one of the oldest cultures on earth, hunting with the Bushman trackers is something to behold. Their skill is unlike any other, reading the signs in the sand and plants of the savanna like a book. With a deep connection to their environment, the San people have the extraordinary ability to channel with the natural world. For a hunter reliant on binoculars, spotting scopes and GPS gadgets, hunting with the San Bushman is awe-inspiring.

An early morning survey of overnight activity at one of the many waterholes and the Bushman can identify a worthy trail in the sand, then, the hunt is on!

The legendary trackers of the Kalahari, the Bushman, lead the hunt each day at Sandveld and track with an inherent knowledge unique to these masters of the veld.

When an animal has been harvested, the Sandveld team will help with the retrieval. Trophies are secured and prepared by our skilled trackers and skinners. The meat is always treated very carefully and is used in the lodge and shared out with the local community.
